This site is about malacology, or the study of shells or molluscous animals, and its history. We will focus mainly on European malacology in the 19th and 20th century, and highlight its practitioners and the collections they made, their fate, and the context in which these people worked.
Editors of this site are Cédric Audibert (Musée des Confluences, Centre de conservation et d’étude des collections, Lyon, France) and Abraham Breure (Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden, the Netherlands / Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Brussels, Belgium). Contributions of readers are welcomed; please contact us via the contact form below. Other sites from the same authors which may be of interest are Cédrics personal site on malacology (with access to the online journal Folia conchyliologica), Bram’s snail site (on Neotropical snails), and Huntingforsnails (on illustrations of molluscs in visual arts and literature).
